When it comes to modern rock, alt. metal and nu metal, most metalheads would probably prefer to take a swift kick to the groin rather than admit they can stand, stomach or God forbid, even enjoy mainstream “crap” like that. Personally, I believe this way of thinking only limits you and thwarts your ability to grow. I do have to admit, though, with labels cramming bands of these ilks down our throats ad nauseum for over ten years now, I can honestly see how some people could be sick and tired of hearing it. I’ve always said that I’ll take good generic over bad original any day of week. But if a band falls on the generic side of things, it is critical that their songwriting is strong enough to sustain a listener’s ear more than once.

Enter Las Veges natives Otherwise and their new album True Love Never Dies. Most may have first heard the band’s name when vocalist Adrian Patrick lent his smooth vox alongside Maria Brink for In This Moment’s hit track “The Promise”; I, however, got my first listen to Otherwise with their self-titled debut back in 2006. Although I thought the album was alright, the record didn’t showcase any of the band’s talent and included one humdrum tune after another. Nothing about the album made the band stand out from the ridiculous amounts of acts just like them. In 2009, Otherwise released an EP titled Some Kind Of Alchemy. After a lackluster debut, I didn’t hold out much hope for the abbreviated followup. Once I hit play, I was pleasantly surprised at how much these guys had grown in three years time. Their sound had gotten bigger, tighter and stronger, and the songwriting had progressed leaps and bounds over their first disc. Earlier this year, when I heard Century Media had not only signed the quintet but also set them up with famed producer and total bad ass Jay Baumgardner (Papa Roach, Orgy, Godsmack, Seether, Evanescence, P.O.D., etc.) to release a new album, I felt it was the perfect opportunity for them to expand on what they had done with Some Kind Of Alchemy and take the world by storm. Well, I was wrong.

True Love Never Dies opens with the meaningless “I”. Actually, the album features three of these ridiculous intros, appropriately titled “I”, “II” and “III”. All three are pointless precursors to the songs that come after them, and not a single one incorporates anything interesting enough to warrant its own separate track. They could have easily added those short extensions to the beginning of the tracks that follow and do away with all the excess silliness. The album’s first real track comes by the name of “Die For You”. Sporting an old school Papa Roach-style bounce in the verses and big sing-a-long choruses, it’s a nice way to officially begin the record. Problem is, it doesn’t last.

Sadly, most of the record is vanilla and void of any true substance. Other than a few scattered tracks, True Love Never Dies is a weak, stagnant and pretty lifeless listen. Songs like “Lighthouse”, “Scream Now”, “I Don’t Apologize (1000 Pictures)”, “Soldiers”, “Crimson” and “Heaven” all exude mediocrity at their very best. It’s painfully obvious that every one of these tracks lack the necessary “it” factor to really resonate. Another thing I noticed was just how flat the album sounds. The “heavier” songs lacked punch, while the softer tracks lacked depth. With Baumgardner behind the board, I expected more bang for my buck but didn’t get it.

Tracks like “Die For You, “Don’t Be Afraid”, “Vegas Girl” and “Silence Reigns” are easily True Love Never Dies‘ best. With its anthem-esque qualities, “Don’t Be Afraid” sounds like a modernized rock version of Rise Against, while “Vegas Girl” is a fist-pumping rocker that incorporates a Volbeat-like swagger alongside Patrick’s super sleek Michael Poulsen-style (Volbeat) vocal. “Silence Reigns” is a solid nu metal head-bobber that sounds like something that could’ve been taken off Boiler Room’s Can’t Breathe. By no means are these songs innovative or anything, but at least they are good enough to make you want to listen to them multiple times.

Although it does have some memorable moments, True Love Never Dies is an ordinary and overly bloated record that sees Otherwise regress by playing it way too safe. True Love Never Dies is neither a good album nor a bad album; it’s simply a “meh” album. When I said I’d take good generic over bad original, I meant it. Unfortunately, this isn’t good enough to cut it, so I’ll pass and so should you.
