'Iraena's Ashes' the album by ALPINE FAULT is a thoughtful study of the themes of loss and separation, love and death. Inspired by true events, the album's narrative relates the story of the tragic 2004 disappearance of young model and student-teacher, Iraena Asher, in the area around New Zealand's notoriously treacherous surf beach, Piha.
"[Iraena's Ashes] didn't start off as a story about Iraena walking into the ocean..." sa...ys Ant Royle, guitarist and male-half of the dual-vocal six-piece, before going on to explain that it is a collection of works the origins of which stem back to a former version of the band right up to the now Brisbane-based current era.
"As we started piecing it together though, we realised that the story was taking shape on its own and certain feelings and themes started to emerge and bind it together. I actually remember having this kind of spooky feeling about the way it was coming together as if something (or someone) was involved in putting the pieces in place [laughs]... I knew I had to get it right or I might just end up with an unwelcome (and slightly soggy) visitor by my bedside!"
All jokes aside, the technical execution of this debut offering is stunning. Its wide musical landscapes and dynamics genuinely draw the listener away to a place in the imagination notably without the pretence of power-metal fantasy or the often false bravado of 'brutal' modern metal. You can't help but welcome the mix of its sophisticated simplicity and its high standard of technical yet tasteful creativity.
Royle and the band entered the studio with local engineer and co-producer Adam Merker earlier in 2011 and Royle claims that much of the album's "honesty" could only have been captured by someone of Merker's ability.
"Adam Merker is all about the quality and integrity of the music which is why I think we related to him so well. He wasn't just hitting the record button either - his creative process is as impressive as his technical one and his patience is never ending. If this album sees any kind of success, it'll be thanks - in a big way - to him."
And there's no doubt it will. ALPINE FAULT's Iraena's Ashes is a debut not to be missed - and if you get a chance to see this band live, take it!'
